Bayonet, M1917, Remington (AEF)
Very nice genuine WWI US M1917 bayonet. Based on the British Pattern 1913 design (intended for the Enfield P14 rifle), this sword bayonet was initially introduced for the Enfield M1917 rifle yet could also be used with most of the American 'trench guns' of the era, such as the Winchester Model 1897 and Model 1912. This type remained in service during the Second World War, for use with the above-mentioned shotguns as well as recently introduced models such as the Ithaca Model 1937.
The present bayonet belongs to a lot first intended for the British Army and reclaimed by the US War Department because of the shortage of M1917 bayonets. The right side of the blade thus features both the British reception mark (obliterated) and the US stamp, demonstrating this reappropriation. Similarly, on the left side, number 17 and hallmark Remington have been added under original denomination 1913.
Bayonet is complete and in excellent overall condition; delivered in its original steel and leather scabbard.
