Bayonet 1898/05, Sawback Removed
Genuine WWI German 1898/05 bayonet, intended for the Gewehr 98. Initially designed for Pionere units, the 'sawback' type bayonet soon earned a bad reputation amongst the opposing forces, which claimed its blade was shaped to inflict more severe wounds in combat. As a consequence, most of these blades had their sawback ground-off from 1917 onwards, as is the case for the present bayonet.
The blade features Kaiser Wilhelm's monogram W along with the imperial crown and year 16; the manufacturer's hallmark also remains clearly visble: Deutsche Maschinenfabrik A.-G. Duisburg.
Complete with its original wood grips, delivered in its genuine metal scabbard with original brown leather bayonet carrier hallamrked Wunderlich, Berlin. Good used condition.
Blade length: 36.5cm.
