The present picture, taken by war correspondent Altstadt, shows a combat group positioned on the roadside, watching the horizon, somewhere in the vast plains of USSR.
The reverse of the photo bears the following caption, typewritten in German: Die Spitze unserer vordersten Kolonne sucht das Gelände na ch feindlichen Widerstandsnestern ab. ('The head of our front column searches the terrain for pockets of enemy resistance.')
