Activated in 1846, it is one of the oldest cavalry regiments in the US Army. In 1943, it adopted the designation 3rd Mechanized Cavalry Group.

The unit landed in Normandy on August 9, 1944, where it was assigned as the reconnaissance unit for the XX Corps of Patton's 3rd US Army.

On August 31, 1944, it conducted a daring raid over 121 kilometers behind Allied lines to secure the bridge over the Moselle River at Thionville, which proved successful. It took part in the Battle of Metz in the fall of 1944 and the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944.
