Activated in 1943 at Fort Lewis, Washington, it arrived in Europe on September 30, 1944, landing on Omaha Beach. It served as an independent reconnaissance unit attached to the 1st US Army. During the fall, it took part in the Battle of Hürtgen, where it was temporarily assigned to the 2nd and 83rd Infantry Divisions.

On December 18, 1944, it was struck head-on by Kampfgruppe Hansen of the 1st SS Panzer Division at Poteau, Belgium. After several days of intense fighting against the Waffen-SS, it regrouped at Vielsalm and was attached to the 7th Armored Division.
