Kelso Crowder Horne Sr. was born on November 12, 1912, in Laurens County, Georgia. He was the son of Joseph Hanley Horne and Maude Dell Crowder Horne. He was married to Doris Garner Horne.

Kelso served in the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, as a First Lieutenant during World War II. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, he parachuted into Normandy and fought near Sainte-Mère-Église, Chef-du-Pont, and the La Fière bridge. His photo, taken by Life photographer Bob Landry, became iconic, appearing on Life’s August 4, 1944, cover.

On July 4, 1944, Horne was wounded by shrapnel near Hill 95 and sent to a hospital in England. He later fought in the Ardennes, La Gleize, and the Ruhr, and ended the war meeting Russian forces on the Elbe. His division helped liberate the Neuengamme concentration camp. After the war, Horne returned to Georgia, where he passed away on November 25, 2000. Following his wishes, his ashes were interred near Hill 95 in Normandy.
