Genuine WWII British flag, Red Ensign, attached to a wooden pole. 

The spike bears initials 'RF' for République Française, indicating that the present flag may have seen service in a French city hall.

Adopted in 1800, this version of the Union Jack, also known as the Red Duster, was primarily designed as the civil ensign of the United Kingdom -- as such, it is flown on merchant ships and other types of civilian vessels.

During the 19th century, various colonies and dependencies of the Crown added their specific coat of arms to the Red Ensign; the Canadian variant remained in use as the official flag of the country until the introduction of the current Maple Leaf in 1965.
