This unit participated in the French campaign as early as 1940 and was evacuated at Dunkirk. It then distinguished itself in the battles in North Africa against General Rommel's Afrika Korps, notably at Tobruk and El Alamein. In the summer of 1943, the division landed on the beaches of Sicily with the objective of reaching Salerno.
On June 6, 1944, it landed at Gold Beach, in the communes of Ver-sur-Mer and Asnelles, and continued to fight throughout the Normandy campaign. Afterward, it moved toward Belgium and the Netherlands.
In November 1944, after three and a half years of overseas service, the division was repatriated to the United Kingdom, where it served as a reserve unit.
