The 2nd Battalion fought in Normandy as part of the 231st Infantry Brigade, 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division, landing on June 6, 1944, at Sword Beach.

The 12th Battalion fought in Normandy as part of the 6th Airlanding Brigade, 6th Airborne Division. Its A Company landed in France by glider in the early hours of June 6, 1944; the rest of the unit was transported by sea.
