Bag, Duffle, S/Sgt. John Garrigan, Co. B, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne Division, ETO

Genuine WWII US Army duffle bag, made in OD 7 heavy duty canvas and fitted with a handle and a shoulder strap.

Larger and sturdier than the barrack bag, this type could be secured with a padlock.

Manufactured by Champion Canvas Supplies Inc. in 1944.

Good overall condition; retains its sling.

The markings stenciled on this bag indicate that it once belonged to some John R. Garrigan, ASN 31295847, Company B, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division.

John Rirchard Garrigan was born on February 3, 1923 in Waltham, Massachusetts in a family of Irish descent (paternal branch) and joined the US Army on February 8, 1943. He was awarded his 'jump wings' and went on to serve with 506th PIR, parachuting into Normandy on June 6, 1944 prior to participating in the ensuing campaign in Europe. A recipient of the Purple Heart following a wound received in action on October 5, 1944 in Holland, he was discharged on December 1st, 1945 as a Staff Sergeant, and passed away on April 10, 2013.
