Great genuine WWII American Red Cross long-sleeved dress, of the type intended for female volunteers of the Hospital and Recreation Corps.

Known as the 'Gray Ladies', they provided various non-medical services to patients in military hospitals; by the end of the war, their total number reached 50,000.

Tailored in light blue cotton cloth, the present dress features a separate cloth belt, two shoulder straps with royal blue tabs specific to the Canteen Corps, two hip pockets and one breast pocket on which a white square bearing an embroidered red cross has been sewn.

Tailored by Mercantile Uniforms in New York. Size 14.

Complete and in very good overall condition; the American Red Cross Volunteer shoulder sleeve insignia and enamel badge are still present; the name tag pinned on the breast pocket indicates that the dress once belonged to some Mrs. M. Provin.
