Rare genuine WWII German sleeve insignia, intended for being worn by Terek Cossacks serving in the Heer.
From 1942 onwards, following the German invasion of USSR, some elements from various ethnic minorities persecuted by the Soviet regime decided to join the Wehrmacht to fight the Red Army.
Cossack volunteers, particularly from the Caucasian regions of the Don and the Terek, thus put on the Feldgrau uniform and formed several cavalry units, which were gathered together in the 1. Kosaken-Kavallerie-Division in 1943 prior to being transferred to the Waffen-ᛋᛋ the following year. These troops were mostly employed in anti-partisan warfare in Yugoslavia.
