Very rare German paratrooper bicycle trailer, Fahrrad-Anhänger, abwerfbar.
Historical provenance:
Recovered by the neighbor of the Dead Man's Corner Museum in 1944, Mr. Laurence, after being abandoned by paratroopers on the lane in front of his house, and later displayed for many years in the 'Carentan' diorama of the D-Day Experience Museum.
Field-modified example attributed to Fallschirmjäger-Regiment 6, observed in the Carentan area, Normandy: replacement of bicycle wheels with drop container wheels Steckachse mit Rad, and removal of the storage chest. No Luftwaffe directive located to date; attribution based on collector documentation from the Carentan sector.
Introduced in August 1942, this single-wheel trailer was designed for use by German paratroops. It could be folded, carried aboard transport aircraft, and dropped by parachute. Once on the ground, the trailer was quickly assembled and put into service. It could be pulled by hand or attached to a bicycle, making it a practical means of transporting ammunition and equipment in the field.
