The 164th Infantry Regiment deployed to Guadalcanal on October 13, 1942 to support the 1st Marine Division, thus becoming the first US Army outfit to take part in a land offensive action since the beginning of the war. The regiment was soon known as 'The 164th Marines' and its members earned the nickname 'Jungle Fighters'.
After the Battle of Guadalcanal, many officers and other ranks of the unit volunteered in the 5307th Composite Unit, a.k.a. 'Merrill's Marauders', with which they subsequently fought in Burma. The 164th Infantry Regiment itself participated in the campaigns of Bougainville and the Philippines.
