Cap, Visor, Officer, US Army, 1st Lt. Bruce Kimmel, P-38 Ligthning Pilot, 49th FG, 5th Air Force, USAAF, PTO
Genuine WWII US Army officer's visor cap, of the standard regulation type.
Manufactured by B.B. McGinnis in Merced, California; corresponds to size 7.
Good, worn condition; retains its original cap badge, leather chinstrap and buttons.
The lack of stiffener gives this hat a 'broken' shape quite popular amongst USAAF personnel.
Name Kimmel and ASN 17039099 have been written on the reverse of the russet leather sweatband.
Bruce Lee Kimmel was born on April 12, 1923 in Sparta, Illinois and joined the Air Forces on January 31, 1943. After being awarded his gunner's wings in September 1943, he received his pilot's wings as a 2nd Lieutenant in May 1944 (officer's ASN O-779485), and went on to fly P-38 Lightnings with 49th Fighter Group, 5th Air Force in the Pacific. He was discharged on July 29, 1946 as a 1st Lieutenant, and passed away on January 13, 1996.
