Cap, Lt. T.E. McLear, 471st Bomb. Group, 1943
Rare genuine WWII US Army khaki cotton poplin visor cap, of the type initially intended for mountain troops.
Features a wide ear flap and four ventilation eyelets (two on either side) -- no chinstrap.
Label is hardly legible yet probably dated June 4, 1943; size 7 ½.
Very good overall condition; the leather name tag sewn on the front indicates that it once beloned to some T.E. McLear.
The latter may be Thomas Edgar McLear, who was born on October 19, 1918 in Alexandria Bay, New York and joined the Air Corps on September 4, 1941 (ASN 12006067). He was awarded his pilot's wings as a 2nd Lieutenant (officer's ASN O-789191) and went on to serve with 806th Bomb. Squadron, 471st Bomb. Group. He was discharged on March 24, 1946, and passed away on July 10, 2008.
