Genuine WWII US Army M1 helmet, front rim seam and fixed loops, manufactured by McCord, shell number 164C.
Canvas chinstrap with brass buckle and hook.
Comes with its original liner, manufactured by Firestone, featuring khaki cotton web suspension and neckband, russet leather sweatband, and plain A washers; the following inscription is visible on the sweatband:

Nice homogeneous set, in good overall condition; the above-mentioned name and ASN indicate that the present helmet once belonged to some Chauncey M. Friend, Jr.
Chauncey Mason Friend, Jr. was born on July 22, 1925 in Friendsville, Maryland and joined the US Army on September 17, 1943. He went on to serve with the Air Forces, was awarded his aerial gunner's badge and deployed to the MTO with 726th Bomb. Squadron, 451st Bomb. Group, 15th Air Force. On August 22, 1944, after taking off from Castellucio, Italy, B-24J Liberator serial 42-51300 Wet Dream, aboard which he was flying as a ball gunner, was shot down by enemy fighters during a raid on Vienna, Austria. The aircraft crashed in Hungary and 'Friendy' was captured; interned at Stalag Luft IV in Gross Tychow, Pomerania, he was liberated in April 1945, repatriated in June and discharged on October 29 of that year. He passed away on February 10, 1995.
