Rare genuine WWII US Army Graves Registration Service temporary burial identification tag, which identifies 2nd Lieutenant John H. Oates, officer's ASN O-765053, deceased on September 12, 1944.
Damaged condition; comes in a frame along with a phograph (reprint).
John Harris Oates, Jr. was born on April 11, 1916 in Denver, Colorado and joined the Air Forces on March 19, 1943 (ASN 19136611). He was awarded his pilot's badge as a 2nd Lieutenant on January 7, 1944, went on to serve with 863rd Bomb. Squadron, 493rd Bomb. Group, 8th Air Force and deployed to Europe in August. On September 12 of that year, while flying his third mission, he was killed in action when his aircraft, B-17G Flying Fortress #44-6277 'G6-P', was shot down by the Luftwaffe during a raid on Magdeburg, Saxe-Anhalt, Germany. The tail gunner was also killed in the crash, while the other seven members of the crew were captured after bailing out.
