Grouping, 1st Lt. Fred Kohl, P-61 Black Widow Pilot, 421st Night Fighter Squadron, 5th Air Force, USAAF, PTO
Rare and nice genuine WWII US Army grouping, made up of the following items:
- officer's regulation 'Ike Jacket' of the type introduced in April 1944, made in 'chocolate' shade wool gabardine and retaining the following insignias: 'U.S.' and Air Corps collar insignias, 1st Lieutenant rank insignias, 5th Air Force shoulder sleeve insignia, pilot wings, ribbon bars (WWII Victory Medal, Air Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one star, and Philippine Liberation Medal with one star), and identification badge bearing name F. E. Kohl;
- officer's garrison cap in 'chocolate' gabardine, retaining its 1st Lieutenant rank insignia, and in which name Kohl and laundry number K-0312 are clearly visible;
- pair of early dog tags with chain, issued to Fred E. Kohl, ASN 19172434, blood type O, Protestant, with name and address of his father;
- later dog tag with short bead chain, issued to Fred E. Kohl, officer's ASN O-770312, vaccinated in 1943 and 1944, blood type O, Protestant;
- War Department identification card, issued on August 23, 1944 to 2nd Lieutenant Fred E. Kohl, Air Corps and coming in its original leather card holder;
- Junior Pilot ring.
A lot of five photographs (reprints) and a copy of his service record (not shown here) complete this great homogeneous set, in excellent overall condition.
Fred Ernest Kohl was born on November 8, 1923 in Carmen, Idaho and joined the Air Corps on December 12, 1942. He was awarded his pilot wings with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant on March 12, 1944 and went on to serve with 421st Night Figther Squadron, deploying to the Pacific in October of that year, where he flew his P-61 Black Widow on numerous missions in New Guinea and the Philippines. Repatriated on February 2, 1946, he was discharged on March 31 as a 1st Lieutenant, and passed away on December 19, 2015.
