Rare genuine WWII Royal Netherlands Marine Corps grouping, made up of a USMC type dog tag, a cloth shoulder title and three metal insignias, which belonged to some A.P. van der Zalm, service number 4502939, blood type O.
These details could correspond to Albertus Petrus Leonardus van der Zalm, born on October 30, 1920 in Noordwijk, Netherlands and deceased on April 19, 2007.
About 5,000 Dutch volunteers were trained and equipped by the US Marine Corps from 1943 to 1945, mostly at Camp Lejeune and Camp Davis, in order to form an autonomous brigade intended for retaking the Dutch West Indies from the Japanese.
Following the surrender of the Empire of the Rising Sun, the Mariniers were not given the opportunity to fight the Japanese forces -- instead, they were to face the nationalist guerilla for four years, until Indonesia was eventually granted independence.
