The 1st Battalion was part of the 8th Infantry Brigade, 3rd (Ironside) Infantry Division, which landed on Sword Beach on June 6, 1944.
The 2/4th Battalion was transferred to the British Army's airborne forces and converted to become the 13th Parachute Battalion and was attached to the 5th Parachute Brigade, 6th Airborne Division, which landed between Caen and Sword Beach on June 6, 1944.
