Created in 1942 on the initiative of some Ian Fleming, an intelligence officer of the Royal Navy who later became famous for his post-war spy novels, this special unit was primarily intended for gathering high value sources of information such as codes, documents, communication and detection materials, prisoners...
Under the authority of the Combined Operations, No. 30 Commando, which was redesignated 30 Assault Unit in late 1943, participated in various operations in the Mediterraean and in Europe, including the tragic Dieppe raid in August 1942. In June 1944, some elements landed in Normandy (Juno Beach and Utah Beach) prior to taking part in the liberation of Paris in August.
Made up of volunteers from the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Air Force, it never exceeded 200 servicemen.
