David William Agnew was born on January 1st, 1904 in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin and entered into active service on July 9, 1942 as a Lieutenant Commander of the US Naval Reserve. He transferred to the 2nd Naval Beach Battalion on March 12, 1943 as second in command, and went on to participate in the operations in the Mediterranean and in Normandy, and later at Okinawa. During the invasion of Sicily, he was wounded in the head a few days after assuming command of the unit, following the wound sustained by Commander John F. Curtin. He was killed on December 24, 1964 in the bomb attack of Hotel Brink in Saigon, Vietnam.
