Bag, Assembly, Clothing, Flyer's, Type B-4, Cpt. Milton Axthelm, 41st Evacuation Hospital, Le Molay-Littry, Normandy
Genuine WWII US Army Type B-4 Flyer's Clothing Assembly Bag, made in canvas and leather and introduced in November 1939 as a replacement for the Type B-3.
Uniforms could be stored flat on their hangers, before folding the bag in two and closing it completely thanks to a pair of zippers and one securing strap; three outer compartments are intended for storing various personal belongings. Although originally issued to air crews only, this item was also used by officers of other services.
Quite good, used condition; shows an interesting invasion code made up of three horizontal bars (white-red-white) and number 43798, which correspond to 41st Evacuation Hospital.
Various inscriptions visible on the bag and its tag indicate that it once belonged to some Captain Milton F. Axthelm, ASN O-232066, Medical Corps.
Milton Frederick Axthelm was born on March 15, 1902 in Cardington, Ohio and earned his medical degree in 1931. He went on to serve in Europe with 41st Evacuation Hospital from March 1943 onwards, including at Le Mollay-Littry, Normandy, France in June 1944. He was discharged in 1945 as a Major, and passed away on September 23, 1984.
