The Legion of Merit was created by the US Government on July 20, 1942 and awarded for exceptionnally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements.
This was the first US award that could be given to foreign nationals and the only one to be issued in several degrees -- Legionnaire, Officer, Commander, and Chief Commander. This is the Legionnaire Degree.
