Pouch, Medical, and Cap, Garrison, Maj. Salvador Castañares, OSS, MTO & ETO
Genuine WWII US Army grouping, made up of a medical pouch intended for carrying various first-aid items, and a 'chocolate' garrison cap featuring the officer's black and gold piping.
The following mention has been written on the top of the musette bag: Maj. S. Castanares O-473721 M.C.
As for the cap, name Castanares is also visible on the reverse of the russet leather sweatband, and various moth holes are worthy of note.
Salvador Castañares was born on January 31, 1908 in Monterrey, Mexico and emigrated to the United States in 1925 to study medicine. He became a doctor in 1936 and a citizen of the US on April 25, 1941, prior to joining the US Army on June 6, 1942 as a surgeon (officer's ASN O-473721).
He went on to serve as a Flight Surgeon with the Air Corps and deployed to North Africa, where he was selected by the Office of Strategic Services for various clandestine missions, which led him to serve in Iran and in Europe. Repatriated in 1944 following an injury, he was discharged on April 29, 1946 with the rank of Major, and passed away on March 19, 2005.
