Genuine WWII US pocket New Testament featuring a gold-plated steel shield, on which the following sentence is engraved: 'May the Lord be with you'.
When placed in the breast pocket, this 'Shield of Faith' was supposed to stop a bullet or shrapnel and thus save the serviceman's life…
Complete (512 pages) and in good overall condition; comes in the remnants of its original cardboard box.
The various annotations visible in the bible and on the box indicate that they once belonged to some Staff Sergeant Robert Eagleson, who was then serving with 349th Service Squadron, 25th Service Group, USAAF.
Robert Eagleson was born on June 8, 1920 in Farmington, Illinois to Scotch-Irish parents and joined the Air Corps on January 5, 1942 (ASN 16052282). He went on to serve with 20th Air Force and deployed to the China-Burma-India theater of operations, where he was awarded the Bronze Star on April 21, 1945. He was discharged on June 24 of that year with the rank of Staff Sergeant, and passed away on June 24, 1996.
