James Carl Wuerthele was born on November 27, 1924 in Wickliffe, Ohio and joined the US Navy on October 10, 1942 (service number 615-31-91). His name appears, with the rank of Seaman 2nd Class, on the list of Seabees personnel present aboard the USS Chaumont (AP-5), a transport ship which departed Seattle, Washington in February 1943 and was bound for Dutch Harbor, Aleutian Islands, Alaska, where the men joined the 8th Naval Construction Battalion.

Jimmy Wuerthele and his unit later transferred to Pearl Harbor prior to deploying on Iwo Jima a few days after the initial phase of the amphibious assault, in March 1945. The 8th NCB was stationed on the island until October of that year, sustaining some casualties -- 2 men killed and 18 wounded. Jim was discharged in December 1945 as an Electrician's Mate 3rd Class and passed away on January  6, 2019.
