Nice genuine WWII US Army M3 brown leather shoulder holster intended for the Colt M1911A1 Pistol, caliber .45.

Manufactured by Boyt and dated 1943.

Introduced for Air Forces pilots in 1942, this type was subsequently used in most branches of the military and became particularly popular among airborne troops and armored crews.

Quite good, used condition; features a theater-made lanyard, which consists of two leather shoelaces fitted with a snap hook.

The following mention has been stamped on the front:R.D. Shaw O 685744.

Robert Dwight Shaw was born on September 2, 1922 in Omaha, Nebraska and joined the Air Corps on November 25, 1942 (ASN 17072000). After being awarded his navigator's badge and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on July 15, 1943 (officer's ASN O-685744), he went on to deploy to Europe with 466th Bomb. Squadron, 787th Bomb. Group, 8th Air Force.

On May 9, 1944, his aircraft, B-24H Liberator serial #42-52584 coded 6L-F Worry Bird II, was shot down by some Focke-Wulf Fw 190 near Antwerp, Belgium. The pilot and three members of the crew were killed, while the four survivors, including 'Buddy' Shaw, wounded by a bullet in the right knee, were captured. He was liberated on April 29, 1945 and discharged in November of that year, and passed away on May 19, 2004.
