Recruited in Saskatchewan, the unit fought valiantly in France and Belgium during the Great War.

As part of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, the 'Johns' landed in the first wave on Juno Beach on June 6, 1944, subsequently facing the enemy during the whole Battle of Normandy, participating in violent actions against the 12. ᛋᛋ-Panzerdivision „Hitlerjugend“ at Bretteville-l'Orgueilleuse.
