Rare genuine WWII US Army Corps of Engineers metal case, intended for carrying luminous markers.
Designed for night beaconing, these radium luminous disks were also issued to paratroopers on the occasion of night operations -- attached to the helmet net or any other part of their gear, they allowed troops to recognize each other in the darkness.
Markings on the lid: Corps of Engineers USA, Luminous Markers, Radioactive, Type I.
Dimensions: 7.5in x 4.3in x 1.6in.
