Genuine WWII USAAF M5 Flak helmet, intended for bomber aircrews.
Shell number 1255A.
Because of the immediate need for a flyer's helmet, the T2 received extended service tests and was standardized in December 1943 as Helmet, M3. In January 1945, the M5, which provided better protection thanks to larger ear-flaps, became standard issue in order to supersede the previous model.
Quite good overall condition; retains its cotton web suspension and features a red cross painted on the front; the russet leather sweatband is damaged.
